When you commission a portrait, a collaboration between patron and artist begins…

The Process

  • Our First Consultation

Your first consultation is the perfect time to share your idea for a custom portrait and our chat will help me understand your wishes for the portrait. The discussion will include where the portrait will hang, along with ideas for the size, composition, clothing, pose, style, and more. I will make sure you are familiar with my work and if you decide that we are a good fit we will schedule your portrait. Initial conversations are complementary and a deposit is required to commence the portrait commission process.

  • Photography Session

A professional photography session allows us to gather high-quality reference material for your portrait. Communication before, during, and after the photo session will hone in on the details of the painting project.

  • Image Selection

We will take hundreds of photos and after the photo shoot, we will help you select some images that capture the pose, lighting, and expression that best reveal your subject’s most authentic self. We offer assistance in choosing the setting, wardrobe, pose, and lighting during the photoshoot.

  • In the Studio

The studio is where your portrait comes to life. In the initial stages, I will ask for your feedback to ensure we have the size, pose, and look you are happy with. Then using the highest quality materials I will begin painting your portrait. Process photos and updates will bring you on the journey as the portrait is refined.

  • Framing

Each portrait comes with its very own custom-built hardwood frame built by Christopher. He will work with you to select the best wood, stains, and varnish to enhance your artwork.

So often framing is left to the client and becomes a burden. At Hayes Haley Studios, we want you to be able to rest assured that we will deliver your painting with a quality frame from the start.

  • Completion & Delivery

Once your painting is completed and framed your new portrait can be either shipped, hand-delivered, or picked up at the studio. The cost of shipping is free for the continental US only.

We offer complimentary installation to local clients and if we are unable to come to you will send clear instructions to guide you to display your portrait proudly and professionally.

From the initial consultation to delivery, the commissioned portrait process generally takes between three to six months
